LOCH NESS STORM IN A TEACUP (Jon)

‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us’ is a Facebook event, which at the time of writing (the end of July) is planned for September 20th, when large numbers of people claim they are going to storm the notorious Area 51 airforce base in Nevada to search for evidence of extra-terrestrial life, which many people believe is being held there by shadowy forces within the US Government.
The event was created by someone called Matty Roberts, who has claimed, publically, that it is a joke that got out of hand. Nearly two million people have claimed that they are going, and a spokeswoman for the US Airforce has made a public statement discouraging people from attempting to enter military property. I highly doubt whether they will actually carry this ‘invasion’ out, but if they were to do so, there is at least a little skewed logic behind it: if enough people were to storm the airforce base (and here, I would like to stress, that I think it is fiction as well) then the base might give up some of its secrets. And now, inspired by this nonsense, a bunch more people are planning to ‘storm’ Loch Ness, which is a project with far less of a logical motive.
Whether there is a Loch Ness monster or not remains a matter of debate by the general public and the media, but, if there is such a thing (and if there is, it is almost certainly a large fish), the only way that its existence could be determined is scientifically. And a bunch of overexcited social media users rampaging around the Great Glen may do wonders for the local tourist industry, but is highly unlikely to actually achieve anything else. Sorry guys.
